28-year-old Lindsey grew tired of catcalls from men on the street during her daily commute, so she decided to do something unusual about it. The Minneapolis attorney created Cards Against Harassment, a website dedicated to educating and exposing men who harass women.
When she hears a catcall, Lindsey now confronts the man and hands him one of these cards, which she makes available to other women who appreciate direct confrontation…
In addition to handing the offending man one of these reprimanding cards, she also records the confrontations and uploads them to YouTube, offering evidence of the behavior she deals with on a regular basis and how she’s responding to it.
There was the businessman who said, “Minnesota chicks are hot”…
And the man who said, “Women were put on this earth to satisfy a man so if she feels offended she should’ve never been born”…
There are more interactions over at her website, along with resources for others wanting to know why street harassment is a problem and how they can respond.
At the very least, Lindsey’s project exposes sexist behavior that occurs every day. But at best, she hopes her efforts will change the behavior of these men who aren’t accustomed to being confronted by the women they’re objectifying.
