When swimming in the ocean, most people worry about getting stung by a jellyfish or stepping on coral. Those are the threats hiding in the water that are the most obvious. However, photographer David Liittschwager discovered something else hiding in seawater that will absolutely horrify you. We hope you didn’t like going in the ocean.

Bacteria, worms, fish eggs, crab larva, diatoms and bugs are all hiding in a single drop of water. So when you swallow seawater, you’re not just ingesting salt. You’re swallowing an entire ecosystem full of creepy crawlies. This is exactly why it’s probably a better idea just to lay out on the beach and swim in the nice, chemical-ridden pool.
