We live in a big place with lots of unknowns. There are things in this world that will surprise you no matter how much you think you know… like these rare medical conditions.

The majority of these rare illnesses sound fake, but they are most definitely real. Some of them are psychological conditions or delusions, while others are as tangible as stone.

1.) Alien Hand Syndrome: This is a neurological disorder where a person’s hand appears to take on a mind of its own.
2.) Trimethylaminuria: A metabolic disorder that makes a person smell like day-old fish. There is no known cause or treatment.
3.) Dysgeusia: This disorder distorts a person’s sense of taste.
4.) Dyschronometria: This disorder makes people unable to accurately estimate the amount of time that has passed.
5.) Mary Hart seizures: Former Entertainment Tonight show host Mary Hart would sometimes cause epileptic seizures in her viewers… just because of her voice.
6.) Rapunzel Syndrome: For some reason, these people are compelled to eat their own hair, which can be extremely damaging to their digestive system. It can get bound up so badly, it could kill a person.
7.) Exploding Head Syndrome: This sleep disorder causes people to hear loud bangs in their head, as if bombs were going off.
8.) Laugh Syncope: This is the tendency to laugh so hard, it makes you pass out.
9.) Lisztomania: This is an intense hysteria that was first used to describe fans of famous pianist Franz Liszt during his performances. A more modern example would be Beatlemania.
10.) Parry Romberg Syndrome: This condition causes half of a person’s face to shrink, causing an asymmetrical appearance.
11.) Human Werewolf Syndrome: This condition, known as hypertrichosis, causes people to grow hair all over their bodies. There are only about 50 people in the world with the condition.
12.) Burning Mouth Syndrome: This is a condition where a person would feel a burning sensation on the roof of their mouth, with no apparent underlying cause.
13.) Retired Husband Syndrome: This is a condition where a woman will show signs of physical illness and depression as her husband approaches retirement.
14.) Busy Life Syndrome: Ever walk into a room and forget what you were doing? This condition is basically information overload, causing that kind of confusion.
15.) Stendhal Syndrome: This disorder causes rapid heartbeat, dizziness and fainting when a person is exposed to art they think is beautiful.
16.) Stone Man Syndrome: This is officially called Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva. It’s a rare mutation of the body’s repair mechanism. It results in the body being ossified, or turned to bone.
17.) Paris Syndrome: This is a psychiatric breakdown that tends to happen in Japanese tourists when the city of Paris doesn’t live up to its romanticized image.
18.) Gourmand Syndrome: This is caused by injuries to the right frontal lobe and leads to an obsessive focus on fine foods.
19.) Foreign Accent Syndrome: This is a condition where patients randomly develop a foreign accent (usually occurring after a stroke).
20.) Truman Show Delusion: People with this delusion believe that they are the center of a imaginary television show.
21.) Walking Corpse Syndrome: Also known as Cotard’s delusion, the people affected by this condition believe that they are dead.
22.) Capgras Delusion: This is the belief that a loved one has been replaced by an identical impostor.
23.) Jargon Aphasia: This is a speech disorder where a person uses made up words in regular sentences. It can get so bad, the person can be speaking in an entirely fictional language.
24.) Fregoli Delusion: A rare disorder where a person believes that many people are actually a single person with the ability to disguise themselves.
25.) Progeria: This is an aging disease that causes children to age very rapidly. They very rarely live to be older than their teens.
