Nik Freeman compiled data from the most recent 2010 U.S. Census and created this unique map that shows every census block that had zero residents. Even one person in the area was enough for Nik to exclude that census block from the map.
Rather than show cities and highways that reflect where people are, Freeman highlighted the places where people are not. The map offers an intriguing and surprising look at the amount of open spaces in the United States…

Michael Chung responded with a similar map of Canada using dissemination area (Canadian census block) population counts from the 2011 Census. Predictably, it’s very, very green…
