Paddling through the waters of Golfo Nuevo off the Atlantic Ocean in Puerto Madryn, Argentina, a kayaking duo was excited to see a pod of massive southern right whales. As they paddled closer to the giant creatures, the whales turned towards the kayakers and their encounter got a lot more intimate than they’d anticipated…
Here’s a translation of some of what’s being said by the kayakers…
Guy: I’m filming. Look, that one is coming over here. Can you see her?
Girl: Yes.
Guy: Look. (whale growls) That one got angry at you. Look, here you have another one…that one’s going to crash into us, eh?…
Girl: Aahhhhh!
Guy: LOOK! It’s coming to bite your oar. LOOK! … Terrible, terrible, terrible! [In this case that means something more like, “Awesome!”] Loooooook! It touched us. We’re on top of the whale, we’re on top of the whale, we’re on top of the whale. Look, we have two. Maintain your balance, maintain your balance….
Despite the danger they’d been in, as they row away, they are laughing with shock and excitement at the incredibly unlikely and astonishing experience.
