In 2002, director Richard Linklater gathered a group of actors and began filming a movie. Then he sent them home. The next year he did the same thing with the same actors. He did this for 12 years. The resulting movie is Boyhood.
The story centers around a boy who was seven when the filming started and 19 when it ended.
Linklater explained why he made a movie with such an eccentric timeframe…
I’ve long wanted to tell the story of a parent-child relationship that follows a boy from the 1st through the 12th grade and ends with him going off to college. But the dilemma is that kids change so much that it is impossible to cover that much ground.
But a lot can happen to a kid during those former years. To which Linklater responded…
And I am totally ready to adapt the story to whatever he is going through.
