Beautifully gentle portraits of supposedly scary dogs show the unfairness of their bully reputation

A group of about a dozen kinds of dogs are sometimes lumped into the category of “Bully Breeds.” These include the likes of Rottweilers, boxers, and pit bulls. Because of their ignominious and sinister reputation, these dogs are more likely to be put down at shelters rather than be adopted.

Alongside his professional work, photographer Douglas Sonders has an ongoing personal project which he hopes can help a bit in turning the tide of public opinion that is so often against these animals. His series, titled “Not a Bully,” features portraits of pit bulls and other dogs portrayed with the gentleness that they are capable of, rather than the ferocity that they are famous for…
